GEEKING OUT: SEO TIPS FOR BLOGS!

Hey people stopping by in Jenn’s World! This is The Missus from On Common Ground. Jenn invited me to guest post while she is away in Big Bad Hell-Ay… So get ready for some geekiness.

I am a bit of a geek (just like Jenn) when it comes to the Internet. Specifically, I am a geek when it comes to bringing new Internet readers to websites. For the past six years, I have worked in part of the marketing industry called “Search Engine Optimization.” Or, “SEO.”

SEO may sound technical. But it is not. The basic gist of it is: Make a website so attractive that even search engine’s want to post your content in their results pages. And if search engines find you and want to post your content in their search results, you will have more Internet traffic reading your words.

Making your blog posts “search engine friendly” is easier than you think. In fact, it is often very intuitive. You may be already doing it and not know it. But I figured a quick “geeky” post about how to SEO your blog would be useful to you all.

So, here are my SEO tips for blogs:

1. Blog often. Search engines are constantly “crawling” the web for new content to show users. The more you post, the more you have to feed the hungry crawlers.

2. When you go to write the title of your post, make sure to include the words you think people will use to find content on the topic you wrote about. For example, if you Google the terms “calories burned in Bikram” or “Buxton Bag”… You will see my blog pop up near the top of the search results.

CaloriesBurnedInBikram

BuxtonBag

You will also notice that I titled each post using these exact words. I did that on purpose. I thought to myself, “If someone goes to Google this, what would they most likely type in to the search box?” Search engines put a lot of “weight” on the title of a blog post when determining where it should be listed in the search results.

3. It is also important to use these phrases in the body of your post. The more often search engines encounter these words in the post, the more likely it is to identify your post with these words to users.

4. Use social media bookmarks and elements (Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc…) Be active with these elements by promoting or directly feeding your blog posts into them. This gets more people reading them. Which, in turn, gets more people LINKING to them. And the more links you get from other Internet users and bloggers, the more “popular” you are with engines like Google.

Jenn, for example, has done a PHENOMENAL job of using social media to help promote her blog. Between the 20SB stuff, Facebook and Twitter… The girl has developed quite the following, all because she knows how to leverage the Internet.

I hope these were helpful. Start using these best practices, and begin getting more readers to your blog today!
